28 April 2009
Rooted Dahlia Cuttings.
Below is how this particular pot came out of their bag. Still looking green and pretty fresh. I've heard it said not to let the leaves tounch the sides of the bag as they will rot but I can't say I ever have much trouble in that respect.
The best way to tell if your cuttings have rooted is to look under the pot and if you can see roots through the holes in the bottom then it’s safe to tip them out. You can of course tip them out anyway but you run the risk of the whole lot dropping on the floor and I find if you can’t see any roots through the holes in the bottom of the pot then even if they have started making roots they won’t be taking any harm. Below you will see one root coming out of the pot but even so it wouldn't have hurt to leave them another week.
Here below are the five cuttings with roots. When potting these on in to three inch pots you have to be very careful not to break off the roots as they are very delicate at this stage.
As the two cuttings that hadn't rooted weren't showing any signs of rotting I repotted them in the hope that they too will make some roots.
Bob.

I noticed today that one of the Wisteria's is just starting to flower.
EB you aren’t a bore of any kind, I find the weather interesting myself and intend to keep on with adding it to my blog when time allows. As you will notice I haven’t even had time to get together a few more Pennine Way pics either. I'm not certain but I think the Japanese garden was made by the present owners grand mother. As for working in the garden I don't know if you ever saw Startrek but to give you an idea of what its like I would liken it to being one of the crew on the Enterprise or similar. I don't have any say in which direction the garden is going but once I know I'm pretty much left alone as to how it gets there if you see what I mean. The boss has ideas on how he wants it to evolve and leaves me to organise my work schedule which I think is how it should be because he knows best what sort of garden and plants he likes and I know best when things need doing and how to fit them all in so they get done. Also the responsiblity is my motivation, if I was to just turn up in a morning and told what I had to do I would not feel responsible for the work getting done, it would just become a job to me if you see what I mean. As it is it's not really like work and in that sense its like doing my own garden, I take just as much pride in how it looks as you do with your garden. My aim is perfection even though I know I will never attain it.

COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
EB It was only this last week that I stopped the weather and its simply because it takes extra time to get all the data together and I hardly have time to write what I do and I didn’t think many people would be that interested in it so I stopped for a while. The logs that I was dealing with the other day was a delivery that needed to be thrown down the hole in to the cellar. I will have to fill the log box up on Friday as it hasn’t been refilled since the family went back but I must do it before they return whenever that is.

COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
Jeanette I don’t really get paid at all for overtime so the extra I work during the summer I take of over the winter. I did watch both the grand prix from China and also the V8s from New Zealand so it was a busy motor racing day for me yesterday. It’s a pity Mark Webber didn’t win instead of his team mate.
The Weaver of Grass ha ha – no I’m never short of rain! It is drying out though but the plants I’m watering are ones that have been newly planted these past few weeks. You’re welcome to the comment, I hope it helps someone.
Red Clover Most of the things I plant are pretty common and what I and many other people have grown for years so there is never a problem knowing how to care for it. The problems I have are with plants that aren’t really native to this country like why do the lemons keep on dropping off my lemon tree. Two weeks hardening off should be enough time. I know I’ve been dragging the trolley in and out for longer than that now but they aren’t the same plants on it as when I started.

Primula
http://garden-week-by-week.blogspot.com/2009/04/do-you-think-seedlings-actually-breed.html how she intends to grow more Primula's for next spring. As most of you will know there are many different kinds of Primula's but for those who don't know I've taken some pictures of the ones we have so you can see the difference for yourself.
In this first picture it shows Primula's and Polyanthus planted together. As you can see they are very similar in looks but the Polyanthus, which at the back in the picture stands a bit taller. This is due mainly to the flower been held above the foliage on a single stem whereas the Primula has all its flowers on short individual stems, each flower having its own stem. The Polyanthus flower is like a firework shooting in to the sky before bursting open. I have to say I prefer Polyanthus for this reason, they are more showy and much easier to dead head, and the ones we had this year have flowered all winter.
As well as the above two you also get Cowslip's, the yellow flowers below. These are like Polyanthus in that they have their flowers on top of a single stem.
Below is a picture of an Auricula Primula, these are more often grown to display in pots rather than used for a bedding display although they can often be found in borders of cottage gardens and are well suited to the british climate.

1) Red Clover asked me a while ago which was something I always looked forward to doing, I couldn’t rightly answer her but I can easily tell you two jobs that I totally hate, one is spraying and the other is having a bonfire unfortunately I have to do both on occasion after much dragging of feet. I had loads of other jobs planned for today but as rain was threatening I decided to bite the bullet and dispose of the burn pile, hopefully this will be the last time until next winter.

COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
Sara Hadrians Wall is a bit of a milestone on the Pennine Way walk and I have to confess to feeling a little cheated when I get there and see what is on offer these days. I now consider myself lucky after reading your comment cos you were definitely cheated because there is a lot more to see than grassy hills. Apart from the wall there are remains several forts and camps to be viewed, Housteads being one such place.
Oh yes, I did just have lettuce in my sandwich.
The Weaver of Grass I don’t have much trouble with slugs in the garden, I think they all live in the greenhouse where they eat all my seedlings If I don’t watch out.
Matron I don’t know about the Film as I haven’t seen it but if they stopped to do anything they were probably like me and just stopped for a rest cos they were nackered.

1) I decided to cut the lawns in the walled garden with the tractor this week both to save time and also there were a few course bits of grass the other mower won’t pick up.
COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
EB Burton Agnes hall is nice, I know what you mean about the windows.
Red Clover Not sure how that loggin’ in things works because I seem to log in from a variety of place. I do have a few veg in the greenhouse but mainly it is given over to ornamental plants. In the summer I grow tomatoes, cucumber, melon and aubergine under glass as a lot of the plants can go out for the summer. Further to your other question I had a bit of a count up today and I grow around 50 different kinds of flower and veg seed.
Jeanette The Gladioli are in two colours, ten white and ten pale yellow. I will plant another twenty in two weeks and another twenty two weeks after that and so on that way there will be a succession of flowers for cutting through the summer.
The Weaver of Grass No I’ve never grown PakChoi, nor eaten it for that matter. As you will see above I to planted out some lettuce today. I haven’t covered mine though.

COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
Kimmie No I didn’t eat all the egg in one go, I still have some left actually.
Red Clover Yes I think it might be pretty horrible if that happens if for no other reason that Vicki might get to wondering who Sarah is. You always ask me some good questions. I will have to have a count up sometime, there will be over 30 different kinds of seeds though some of which need sowing several times over the year.
Matron Don’t worry Tom won’t touch it unless I tell him, he’s very good like that, he won’t even take the other dogs food if they leave any.
Jeanette I don’t have to do anything like that with the celery as I use the self blanching kind.

COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
Sara Sometimes I forget that’s what’s obvious to me isn’t so for other people so thanks for asking about it. I usually prefer just bone meal but this bag was half price with the addition of blood and fish. Bone meal is a potash feed where as blood fish and bone is more of a balanced feed.
EB I’ve lent tools to people in the past and they’ve come back dirty and rusty which is annoying when I go to such lengths to keep them clean. When me and Vicki go round the gardens we want to pull out weeds and stand plants up, it s real hard not to.

NOTES
1) When I first started here I made an arragement with the bosses father to use my own hand tools. Recently it has come to light that when the boss took over this information wasn't passed on to him and he came to me wanting access to the tools. I had to point out that I didn't mind him borrowing them but he needed to know that they were mine and needed to be treated accordingly. He was okay about it and understood my position and asked me to make a list of tools that he did own which is what the inventory was about.
2) Sara Is curious about my choice of plant feed so I took a picture of the bag for you to see for yourselves that its no joke.
COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
Sara I have no idea who’s blood they use!
EB Ha ha!!
Kimmie That’s all there is left after I fed the rest of them to the plants!!!
The Weaver of Grass Cutting the grass always makes such a difference to the garden. Cutting grass of one sort or another takes about one and a half days out of every week during the growing season.
Jim The grease nipple is just to lubricate a belt tensioner so not something that gets much use, not sure if I can get the rest of the nipple out or not.

COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
Sara Sorry, I missed out the comma, I actually feed them on fish, blood and bone meal
Adi You sound like my Tommy, he’s partial to a crust or two. I will be glad when the summer comes and I can have tomato and lettuce and what have you. We have tomatoes from the shop but you might as well eat fresh air for all the taste there is in them so I don’t bother.
Jeanette Yes there were 2 more lambs this morning. I mainly have sandwiches because I only have 45 minutes for lunch so I just want to get something quick and sit down for a while. I don’t mind sandwiches though.

COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHED
Red Clover What a really good question and one I can’t rightly answer straight off. I wonder in fact if maybe you have to divide it up a little because as the year goes round you take on different types of work so things are always changing, I will have to give it more thought and let you know.
Jeanette The tea cakes are also known as hot cross buns, it’s like bread with currants in. I saw a bit of what it’s like in your part of the world last weekend, even got to look at some of the fire damage with Mark Webber.
The Weaver of Grass I think that makes a lot of sense, apart from the roses enjoying the rough treatment it would be great seeing them ripping your worst enemy to shreds!!!
