NOTES
1) Since I dried off the Dahlia’s they have been stored in the basement of the summer house along with the apples. If you want to take cuttings in increase you stock to replace any losses now is a good time to get out the tubers and start them in to growth by bringing them out in to a warm, light place and giving them a drop of water then all being well in a few weeks you will have some nice shoots to take cuttings from. If you aren’t planning on taking cuttings then leave the tubers where they are for the time being.
2) As the weather was not so good I decided today would be a good time to do some work on planning the veg sowing. For this I make a chart and mark on it sowing dates for each veg that I plan on growing. It helps me with planning the succession dates so hopefully I won’t miss a sowing of something.
3) Even though the weather today has not been good I’ve still managed to fill my day with useful tasks. When I started as garden boy at Chatsworth House the old gardeners always used to tell me that if I ever found myself without a job to do in the garden I was no gardener and I’ve found that what said is true – there is always something to do.
4)Just in case any of you thought that as it was bad weather bob would be living it up in a nice warm potting shed I took these 2 pics for you, the first one is of the temps outside and the second pic is of the temp inside the potting shed, as you can see there isn’t much difference
5) If you want to take a look at Bob playing at being an 'Ice Road Trucker' visit Vicki's blog at http://vicks-floral.blogspot.com/ She and the dogs caught up with me when I was haulin' hay from the farm.

COMMENTS FROM THE POTTING SHEDSara No the neighbour never even mentioned running over the tub, I guess she is probably a candidate for the video on Jim

's blog.
Jeanette The council provided the tubs in the first place but I don't know if they will replace them or not.

Anna Yes I do enjoy my job most of the time.

Matron As I said in my post I can't for the life of me see the attraction of killing things for the sake of it. Another thing you have to remember is that these birds are hand reared, so its about as challenging as walking round a chicken run shooting chickens.

Jim Thats the sort of stuff we put in our recycle tubs too, it says on the side that you can put in old cell phones too so I guess anything they can recycle can go in there. The guys who pick up the tub sort out whats what, they have different crates for different things on their truck. No we don't have Groundhog Day here although I have heard of it. As for as I know the whole country is getting snow at the moment. We've had one day of it and the whole country seems to have gone in to crisis, I dread to think what would happen if we got some real bad weather like some countries get. Sara has had snow for weeks yet she and her dogs don't seem to have ground to a halt like people here have.

Our local news station was making jokes about how poorly London was handling the storm! I think it is nice that everyone had a day off - everyone except you that is!

I bought some peas on Sunday to plant. I usually sow them in mid March, if the ground is thawed. So, you are a bit ahead of me.

I watched the video on Jim's blog. That was hysterical.

Sorry to ask a very dumb question...but when you refer to taking cuttings from Dahlias...do you mean that you wait until they are sprouting up, and then just..what? With other plants you can just take some leaves and stick them in a glass of water until they begin to form roots, then stick them into some soil. Do you cut Dahlias the same way? Yes, I know, dumb question, but a question none the less.

p.s. I've been looking at many kinds of Dahlia's online, and think I might order some exciting looking ones for this spring!

Interesting, Bob that you are sowing your vegetable seeds so early in the year. At what stage do you plant them out?
We find here on the clay at six hundred feet , that it is pointless putting anything into our veggie garden until the middle of April - anything put in earlier just waits until May to begin to grow.

I admire your restraint in just sowing 6 lettuce seeds! I keep meaning to be restrained and to plant a few every couple of weeks but I just get greedy and end up with a glut every time!

Sara I should think people the world over were laughing their socks off.

Red Clover There is no such thing as a dump question, its only dumb if you have a question and don't ask it. I will do a post about taking a dahlia cutting when/if I get any shoots up. There is a bit more too it than just sticking a leaf in water but they're easy enough to root from a cutting. Anyway in a few weeks when I take some cuttings I will show you how to do it. There are lots of nice Dahlia's to choose from, the hard part for me is knowing which ones to leave out - I want them all!

Jeanette I did fish out the ice with my hand actually, the worst bit is afterwards when the wind gets to it. It was all for nothing as the sheep have never left the hay feeder but I like to do it just in case.

The Weaver of Grass The soil here is over limestone so it free draining and with a few nice days is starting to dry out also the veg plot is in he walled garden so very sheltered. Things like the Cauliflower and Lettuce can be kept quite a while in pots and the beans hard hardy enough so as soon as the soil is anything like and they're big enough they can go out. I would have sown them straight in the ground now if it hadn't been for the snow. The Peas can go out in March sometime if the weather is okay. Things don't always get timed right and I end up throwing them but if you have them growing there is always a chance you can catch an early window if you get a warm spell. If they're still in the packet you have no chance.

Matron I sowed more than 6 lettuce seeds, I sowed them in a 6 pack module tray and I made a dent in the compost with my finger and but 3 or 4 seed in each hole and when they come up I will pull out the weakest so leaving 6 plants to grow. I will sow some more in a few weeks.
