GP Time.

There are 8 new lambs this morning bringing the total to 30. I'm now going to watch the Grand Prix on TV hopefully it will be full of drama and excitment then it doesn't really matter to me who wins.

I'm out checking the sheep, there were more new lambs in the night bringing the total to 22. I guess that might seen a lot to some people but when we were at the farm we would have more than that in just one night. I don't miss those times.

Seed sowing day.

Being Friday means seed sowing day again. This week I have sown melon, runner bean, climbing french beens, dwarf french beans, green cabbage, red cabbage, brussels, cosmo, canary creeper and amaranthus.

12th April The morning post.

This morning there were 3 more new born lambs when I did my rounds of the sheep pastiures. Since then the morning has carried on from where I left off yesterday. I now have all the plants moved from the greenhouse to the conservatory, the next job being to remove the bubble wrap insulation and then it will just be a matter of sweeping out the greenhouses. I'm hoping to be done for lunch as I want to cut some grass afterwards.

A long job.

I have just finished seed sowing at and its 4 o'clock. It took much longer than I imagined but its a good job well done which is the main thing. For the last hour I am going to harrow the north front gravel, put the bins back and clean and put away the tools. If there is any time left I may move a few plants from the green houses to the conservatory.

I will just point out that for 'Sheffield' read ordinary or lower class people. There are certain people from London and the south east of the country who for some season think they are superior to people who live further north and that is where the reference to Sheffield comes in with it being a northern city as it is.

Lunch break.

The seed sowing is going okay but I still have more to do after lunch. I have to go with what's more important so indoor work will have to be delayed a while. Off to lunch now and as I'm working in the veg garden I reckon it should be lettuce sandwiches for dinner today.

That's that done.

That's the greenhouses taken care of, just a check round and watered everything in need. At this time of year there is always plenty of work in the greenhouses so you should see me back there later as I try and reserve Friday for greenhouse work. Now though I'm off to move some gravel on the north front.

I've just been to check on the sheep and there are two more lambs. Whilst walking to the field I was passed by the gamekeeper on his tractor and trailer and he had a dead peacock on board.

Efergy electricity monitor.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all having or have had a good day. Here it has been dry and sunny so I got cracking with the mower this afternoon and cut all the grass apart from the roadside verge which I will do tomorrow all being well.

As there isn’t much to report in the garden today I am going to show you a little gadget that I got yesterday, it’s called an ‘Efergy’ and is a wireless electricity monitor.

The purchase of this was prompted by receiving a mammoth electricity bill last week. It consists of a sensor that clips on to the live output cable from the electricity meter, this then plugs into a sender unit which sends the amount of electric being used at the current time to a display unit which you can place anywhere in the house. It’s very simple to fix and set up, the instructions are even written in English so there is no problems at all in respect to getting up and running. There are various modes to choose from and if you know the cost per Kw, this info is usually on your bill, you can even set it to display how much you are spending as it happens. There is also a two day graph displayed along the bottom of the display unit. The interesting thing is that it has been around 0.45Kw all day except when I boil the kettle then five minutes after our daughter and friend walk in it breaks all previous records by shooting up to 9.08Kw! I think one of them must have been taking a shower because it has gone back down to 0.46 now. At the moment our daily average is at 12.3kwh and I’ve had it working around 24 hours so it will be interesting to see how it goes from here and more importantly what saving’s can be made.

Away for the weekend.

Today me and the head gardener are going to visit my parents for the weekend. Vicki is going to be working late in the shop because lots of people are buyiing flowers for mothers day so this seems as good a time as any for a weekend away.

The Tree (April).

I have spent most of today moving plants from the greenhouse to the conservatory where they will spend the summer. I try and have what I call ornamental plants in the conservatory and keep stock plants or any that aren’t up to scratch in the greenhouse. So because the conservatory is like a show house I try and pot up as many of the plants in to clay pots so today I was going through the plants in the greenhouses and picking out the ones that are to be show plants in the conservatory this summer, the chosen ones then being potted on with fresh compost in to clay pots. I mix my own compost for these plants, this consists of one 60 litre bag of green waste compost, a 25kg bag of sharp sand and 200 grams of Osmocote slow release fertilizer. That should see them through the next six months by which time it will be getting time to put them back to bed for the winter.

This morning as I was going about my business one of the residents from the courtyard asked if I wanted her two standard bay trees, they are a good six foot tall so I wasn’t going to turn down the offer. I got them for work but I must say I’m tempted to have them for myself except I’m not sure where I would put them. I do have a place for them at work if the boss will let me put them where I want.
