Today I did a bit of Rose pruning. As a lot of you will know it is Spring which one usually associates with Rose pruning although I think in recent years more people have taken to pruning in the Autumn. I don't prune them all now, I mainly stick to the taller varieties and the main reason I like to prune them now is clear to see in the video below. I could of course half prune them but I have enough work to do without covering the same ground twice. Another thing I find with roses that are pruned now is that they start in to growth sooner in the spring, I'm not sure why this would be. Also another benefit to me is that in Spring there is far more work to be done so anything I can do now is an advantage in that respect too.
If you take a close look at this video you can just make out the wind rocking the stem of the Rose back and forth in the ground, this is the reason why I like to prune the taller varieties at this time of the year.

I think it is a very good idea to prune the roses in the fall.

The base of that rose was really moving in the ground...makes sense to prune now! Actually my Dad pruned just about everything in the fall/autumn, he said it made for better growth in the spring.
Is one allowed to vote more than once for the view we would like you to photograph over the next year?
We prune our roses sometime during the first week of February.
