Put the recycle tubs back

NOTES
1) After putting back the recycle tubs at the hall I went to collect ours only to find that the woman next door has run over it and broken it! How do I know it’s the woman next door? Well you don’t watch 324 episodes of CSI and goodness knows how many ‘Police Camera Action’ shows without picking up a thing or two! Actually she was parked on the grass so it was easy enough to follow her wheel marks firstly over the grass and secondly over our tub.
2) The lord and master is up from London for the weekend but I only saw him from a distance so unless I happen to bump in to him this weekend I don’t think I will get to see him before he returns.
3) Today was the last shoot of the season, not the pheasants can rest easy for a while, what’s left of them. I think I must be lacking something somewhere because I can’t for the life of me see where the pleasure is in spending a whole day killing things, I guess it must be a challenge or something.

The Weaver of Grass Well there is no big hole to swallow all the water up, it just soaks in to the ground, you can even walk on where it disappears and its solid enough, after that I suppose it just follows underground caves. I've actually amended what I said last night because in fact it doesn't come out at the bottom of the cove as you would think, instead this water emerges at Aire Head Springs. The water at the cove comes from the moor one and a half miles away.

Looking back to Malham from the top of Malham Cove. Those rocks were wet and it was like walking on ice, I was glad when I was able to get off them.

The dry valley beyond Malham Cove. Once water ran down here and over the Cove as a waterfall, now the water soaks in to the ground higher up the valley and then emerges at the base of the cliff. The people you can see are fellow Pennine Way walkers. The lad in the red trousers was from Holland and the three were father and two sons. We met very often along the way as far as the Tan Hill Inn then we lost touch.

NOTES
1)The former lady to the big house asked me to tidy up her two yards as she is having visitors at the weekend. She also asked if I had anything I could put in her pots that she has by the front door. I don’t really have anything and I don’t feel like rising to the challenge as it’s their own fault there is nothing because that’s what happens when the captain stokes the boilers.
2)Today I got my order of seed potatoes from Marshalls Seeds, this year I’m growing Picasso, Charlotte, Swift and Maris Peer.

Jeanette Thanks for the award Jeanette, thats very kind of you to think of me. We had a lot of rain last summer so that helped to keep things so green and fresh.
Jim No I don't think they will be allowed in to your house unless invited, I think its more of an educational thing than anything else. Also apart from telling you what is good to eat they also advise on sell by dates on the food and food wastage in general and how to avoid being wasteful. I think a better way would be to bring back world war two food rationing for a while then people will educate themselves or starve. I guess with my ideas I will never make it to Prime Minister hey!! Hopefully one day you will get to visit again Jim.

Malham Village. It was here that I met three girls doing the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, they pulled me over to enquiry as to where the campsite was. They were gutted to hear that it was somewhere up the road from where they had just come.

Sara I could write a book on what I think about these people and the way they act but it just winds me up so I will say no more.

Jeanette Ha ha - I'm sure they thought about taxing people for breathing, they just haven't thought of a way to implement it yet. Did you know they're looking to put a higher tax on cell phones that have GPS, decent cameras or any other gadget that makes the phones worth having? So you see a breath tax might not be so far fetched after all.

Dick What you say about the car makers is so true. We used to have several car manufactures here in the UK but now I don't think there are any worth talking about, apart from the foriegn car makers that have factories here. We were making cars that didn't work properly or last very long so that was it, people went elsewhere.

NOTES
1) It seems I saved the worst until last as this particular tree was more difficult than all the others put together as there was not much pruning I could do with the secateurs and had to rely on the long arm pruner to do most of the work. It’s a handy tool to have and okay for a bit of pruning but it gets very tiring when it comes to doing a whole big tree.

2) Below is a sample of a news paper article I saw yesterday. As some of you will know I long ago adopted the head in the sand approach to the news regarding it as nothing more than brainwashing by both media and government but there are times like when visiting my parents that one can't avoid being subjected too it. Its not a bad thing though because after watching several news broadcasts and what have you I realise how blessed I am to have escaped the craving to be bombarded by so called news stories. The article below being one example of why I can't be bothered with it. You may be able to read some of it but just to give you an idea of what its about I will tell you the basics of it. Apparently the government are going to employ food police to go knocking on peoples doors at meal times to see what they're having to eat and if it doesn't meet with their approval you will be in for a lecture. The best part about it is, these people stand to earn up to £8 an hour which is more than either me or Vicki get for doing an honest days work. No doubt in time the government will introduce a tax on burger and chips to cover the cost of these wages.

In a trial in six local authorities across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, the officials have been recruited on full-time contracts to visit an estimated 24,500 homes dispensing dietary advice and tips on how best to reduce the estimated one-third of all food bought which is thrown away.
They will call at homes throughout the day, including lunchtimes and in the early evening, when many people will be busy preparing dinner.
If successful, the eight week trial could be rolled out to other authorities around the country.
Each official, dispatched to the streets after one day of training, will be paid between £7.43 and £8.49 per hour, with a bonus for working on a Saturday.

Jeanette If the Hyacinth bulbs you're trying to safe and grow another year are what have been grown in pots then I wouldn't bother to try because most likely they've been force and if so most likely won't ever come to much after that. What you need to do if you want Hyacinth in your garden is to buy the ordinary Hyacinth bulbs at planting time and put them straight in to the garden. When I grow them in pots I throw the bulbs away afterwards.

The Weaver of Grass The summer house fire is inside the summer house. On a shoot day the beaters use the summer house to have their lunch so if its cold and I'm not doing much I light them a fire. 1 slice of malt bread! Thats no good!! Well I need the energy. I don't know if I have a sweet tooth or not, I just have it because its something from the garden that I can put on bed to make a sandwich. Come the summer I will be eating Tomatoes and Lettuce or beans and stuff so really its more to do with whats handy and whats home made rather than a taste for sweet things. Below is a picture from a post I did in the summer showing what I was having for lunch one particular day. I lived for a long time on what I could pick from the garden.
Katie I don't think there are any white Hyacinth growing this time. The ones that you see are being grown in a heated greenhouse so are well in advance of anything that would be growing outside. Of course with them being in a confined space the scent is very nice when you walk in to the greenhouse.

NOTES
1) I'm going to visit my home tomorrow, I thought I might go walking with Tom but I have to confess to a lack of motivation in that direction at the moment, hopefully its just a Winter weather thing and when the nice weather gets here I will feel more like getting out and about again. Also i think I need something to aim for, like another long walk.
2) I still have one more apple tree left to prune, all being well I will get that finished off next week along with some Laurels that need getting in order.

Matron I think the boss put in many seeds and this is the only one that took. No I don't know what sex it is but I think it looks like its going to lead a lonely life as I don't see any more growing anywhere.
Trixie I don't think its that common here, I've never seen any growing before.I guess its up to the boss if it kills the tree as they're his trees and I reckon he will value the novelty of the Mistletoe more than the apples he gets from the tree.
The Weaver of Grass Yes for sure I think the Dahlia's will be easier to get going also you get more seed for your money. I think the colour I ordered are a lilac colour. Ha the Mulberry jam is still in favour because there is still some left in the jar. It is nice though.
Kimmie I don't know how long the seed lay dormant for, it may have taken me until just now to see the plant.
Jim I think the cars belonged to people going to the shop/off licence, there were just three other campers on site that night and they all walked there. I do like the chocolate biscuits and often have a couple with my morning tea. The scenery was changing all the time on the Pennine Way, its actually harder to find your way when you get down in the valley compared to on the hills.

1) The guy at the garden centre said that if we have another summer like the last it could cause serious problems with Impatiens which suffered from a virus last year so I thought I would try some dwarf Dahlia's instead.
2) Whilst pruning the apple tree by the steps I noticed growing from a branch some Mistletoe. The boss said he put some seeds on the apple trees a couple of years ago but no one has seen anything of it until now so I am quite pleased about that.

Jeanette Yes I do have plenty more, I'm not even half way to Scotland yet! When the pics were taken that I put on the last post it was thundering and lightening all around so I had to put a spurt on to try and get to Lothersdale before I got another soaking, thankfully I was lucky and just managed to get my tent up in time.

The Weaver of Grass This is the time of year to get all these kind of jobs done because the last thing I want to be doing is playing catch up in Spring. Yes the Pennine Way is a great walk even though it was very wet when I did it last July.

Red Clover I'm glad what I said about the Dahlia's was a help to you. Now I've said all that they will probably turn out rubbish this year LOL!

The Weaver of Grass I'm not sure what variety the Tomatoes are, they are actually rooted sideshoots from the ones I grew last summer and as I grew a few different kinds I can't really say. I remember when I first started gardening they had the solid fuel boiler to heat the greenhouses. In some ways I wish it was a solid fuel boiler here as it used to be in the potting shed so would have been nice and warm in there back in the old days. I don't think I would miss looking after the boiler though because as you say it was a bit of a chore.

Jeanette I'm guessing now that Coldies are beer or lager?

Mad Bush Farm Crew I find that grass cuttings from the lawn make a good mulch provided you haven't treated the lawn with weedkiller. I use a lot of grass cutting around the bottoms of the Raspberries and they seem to love it.

Merle Thats okay, just pop in when you have a minute. Its a shame your beans died but as you say its better for them to suffer than yourself. I often wondered why they have the V8 Supercar season in your Winter because most of the motor sport here is done during the summer months but I guess if you have that sort of heat it wouldn't be possible to race a car in it so I reckon that answers my question.

Sara Tomorrow all being well I will include some pictures of Top Withins farm house which is where its thought Wuthering Heights came from in the book written by the Bronte's

Matron Tippy and Tommy are doing fine both are enjoying an afternoon nap at the moment. The boss said that the hedgehog escaped, if the dogs did get fleas then its nothing more than they deserve as they are terrible pests in the garden.

The Weaver of Grass I've never had it before, its another one of Vicki's wonderful creations. I don't think the hedgehog intended being out, knowing those two dogs they went and woke it up.

Mad Bush Farm Crew The farm was a thousand feet above sea level so we got quite extreme weather if there was any around so I think that's why we got frozen up so badly sometimes. Travelling anywhere these days seems to be getting harder. It seems to me that the more times goes on the more backward we become. There is certainly a long way to go before Startrek become reality, I doubt it ever will the way things are going.

Jim I'm glad to see you're back okay and didn't hit any icebergs or anything, now that would have been a worry considering where you went! I already enjoyed looking at you pics and reading the account of your trip so far. I don't know if you were joking when you said about being able to camp close to the car park but the walk I'm post pics of is the long walk I did last summer so there was definitely no cars around, not that belonged to me anyway.

Carla Thank you for popping by. I realised after I read your comment that no one can see the pics of my tomatoes growing anymore so I will post a picture of them which was taken in December just as they were starting to ripen. I must point out that the greenhouse has heating so they are kept pretty warm.

Annie Wicking You're welcome to the visit, I am prone to blog wandering sometimes although I don't always comment - I am a man of few words.

Red Clover Mmmm, I think the easiest way to answer that is to send you a picture as for my fav flower to work with I think I would say Dahlia's. The reason for that is that they are easy to grow, flower non stop from last frost to the first frost, don't seem to mind whether the summer is wet or dry, There size range is from miniature to massive both with regard to the plant size and flower size, they are really easy to propagate from cuttings and the range of colours seem to be just about infinite, of course the biggest drawback to Dahlia's is getting them though the Winter. I have lots of favourite plants but if I could only grow one kind it would be Dahlia's.

Jeanette I don't like the sound of fire, that must be a real worry. I can't imagine it being that hot.

Mad Bush Farm Crew Animals can drink a lot of water when the weather is hot. When I was on the farm I also ended up carting water around in very cold weather because all the outside troughs were frozen solid so I had to cart water to the troughs with the water tanker.

salina The road out of the valley is very steep in places and winds its way between stone built houses clinging to the hillside.

Sara The countryside at this point of the walk is that of the Bronte sisters who wrote such books as Wuthering Heights, my next pictures will be of the moors around where they lived.

After a prolonged spell of freezing weather its best to check water troughs and outdoor pipes for bursts, the trough looked to be fine.

The Weaver of Grass There is a control for Vine Weevil, I can't think what its called off hand though. In this case the plant was a succulent type plant so I'm hoping it will put out new roots now its re potted in clean compost. I do prefer the cold weather in winter because as you say it does a good job controling the busg and what have you.

Jeanette You get used to the cold Jeanette, there was one day when it was painful to put my hand in the trough to fish out the ice. The thing is the sheep probably never once drank from the trough but I always think that if I was in a field and I fancied a drink I would be able to get one so thats why I do it.

Sara Thats just what I thought when I saw the road, I guess its fair to say that it doesn't get the traffic on it that the modern roads do though. It is interesting to see though. The Hyacinths were bought by the former lady to the big house, I think she thought they would open out for Christmas but they didn't so she gave them to me to bring on in the greenhouse for her. I didn't bother to force any this year as no one has bothered with them in the past.

Sara The Pennine way is 160 miles long and runs over the Pennine Hills and the Cheviot Hills which are in the centre of northern England. The way isn't to far away from where I live.

Jeanette Yes the digging and everything kept me very warm, I never have much trouble keeping warm. Glad you like the history lessons!

salina Thanks Salina. We don't get much snow here in the UK and when we do it last no time at all. The worst thing about the UK in winter is the grey gloom and dampness.
